10-08-1995: 20 Photos From the CSX Gentilly Yard In New Orleans

I shot several rolls of film on 10-08-1995 at the east and west ends of CSX Gentilly Yard and its approaches. This is one of them shot in mid-to-late morning light with my Nikon.

These pixs were shot at the west end at Jourdan Road. The beige building in the background was the then-Nestle (now Folgers) coffee facility. In the mornings the smell of coffee was often as strong as the diesel exhaust. The grey buildings are the lift towers for the now-infamous Danziger bridge. The giant pillars behind the SD40-2 are supports for the enormous I-10 high-rise bridge from New Orleans East to Gentilly/New Orleans proper.

CSX Valdosta Yard 04-15-2013

When passing by Valdosta northbound on I-75, Mrs. HOI and I noticed a small yard on the east side of the interstate. We took the exit and were delighted to find a small CSX yard. Even better, a public street (W. Savannah Avenue) parallels its entire length on the south side. Unfortunately the loco storage tracks leave the line toward the northwest. To photograph the engines would require trespassing, something the HOI family does not do.

A Google Earth view of the yard:

In addition to the CSX yard, we found a modified GP40 of unknown provenance. It is "Cater Parrott Railnet" #7000. Cater Parrott has taken over the former OmniTrax GFRR (Georgia Florida Railnet) 43-mile line. The STB has this document showing the Georgia DOT and GFRR have subleased the line to CPR.

Unfortunately it was in such a position that we could not get a sun-side shot of the engine. A business owner next door was kind enough to let me get these through-the-fence shots.

CSX Coil Car Mystery

Hi all----I have a mystery about a coil car that I am seeking to solve with your help.
Back in 2000, I shot a brand-spanking-new CSXT Thrall coil car in mineral red, CSXT #496329.
(photo above copyright, Patrick Harris, 2013)
I didn’t recall seeing any of these mineral-red cars again after my time in Jackson, so I went to RRPictureArchives to see when/if they got repainted. Imagine my surprise when I found the exact same car #, but the car not only was painted in the more traditional blue and yellow of CSX coil cars, but was in fact now an NSC coil car:
CSX 496329
Photo is courtesy of RRPicture Archives. See it on the site below:
A look at the page listing this number series (CSXT #4963XX) shows them all to be NSC cars.
Can anyone tell me if the mineral-red cars were returned to lessor, sold, or re-numbered to another series? It may not be a mystery to someone who knows, but it certainly is to me!
